Moore 'Covers' New Bases
The pop idol returns with a new album and looks forward to more movie roles

By Charles Karel Bouley
Billboard

Mandy Moore has just released a new album and is looking forward to two major movie roles in the coming year.

Not bad for a burgeoning artist -- but considering she is only 19, the agenda is remarkable.

And, like most 19-year-olds, Moore is growing up and venturing out -- personally and musically.

Her third Epic album, "Coverage," a collection of 12 cover songs, is a coming-out of sorts for the singer/actress. In fact, the release is such a personal statement that she vowed to record it on her own.

"I just kind of went and did it," she says with a laugh. "The label knew I was in the studio; they just didn't know what kind of record I was making. I was apprehensive about the concept and wasn't sure they would like the idea."

Moore admits that an album of covers from an artist who hasn't worked in the music world too long was risky. But she says, "I felt passionate, so I wanted to finish it and present it complete so people couldn't say, 'Maybe you should have done that song or this song.' "

The idea is to introduce the covers to an audience that -- given Moore's primary demographic of teens and pre-teens -- may not have been born when most were originally recorded. The first single is a cover of John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith in Me," which Moore says turned into another statement of sorts for her.

" 'Have a Little Faith' was the last song I recorded, and I was so nervous because the original is so wonderful," she says. "I wasn't sure with half the songs if I was ready to tread that ground, but with this one, I discovered parts of my voice that I never had before. So 'Have a Little Faith in Me' is a testament to that."

Epic certainly has faith in Moore and this album -- and for good reason. Her 1999 debut, "So Real," went platinum. (The album was reissued the following year as "I Wanna Be With You" and went gold.) She has had a solid track record since, with a slew of movie roles, a near-constant presence as an MTV personality and high-profile ad contracts with such companies as Neutrogena.

With this album, "she was much more hands-on than ever before," says Scott Carter, vice president of marketing for Epic. "We're looking to widen her audience. The goal for all of us is to get some of her fans to listen to this type of music."

Moore contends that she is not worried about comparisons of her interpretations with those of the original artists, having tackled songs by such heavyweights as Joan Armatrading ("Drop the Pilot"), Cat Stevens ("Moonshadow"), Blondie ("One Way or Another") and Joni Mitchell ("Help Me").

"It's for people to decide what I add to these songs, not me," she reflects. "I just wanted to sing them. The songs are all genius and perfect to begin with, so I didn't feel the need to do something completely different. I wanted to hold true to the songs."

The album was recorded in a garage studio behind producer John Fields' house, which she says was a priceless experience.

"It is the first album that has my complete, 100 percent stamp of approval," she says. "I love the last record, but this was my passion and my pet project. It was a collaborative process with John Fields. On this one, as a person and an artist, I found my voice.

"I paid for the record; I wanted to go out on that limb," she says. "It was so low-key, it wasn't an $8,000-a-day studio, which gave us a chance to explore without a lot of pressure."

Moore will promote the record until early next year, when she returns to the movies. "Saved" and an untitled film will be released in 2004, and she is looking at new scripts.

So what's the ultimate goal?

"Family. My work is not my life; my family is my life. I have to make time for it all, and I've been so lucky that I have been able to so far. As for my career, you don't have to decide whether to be an actress or a singer anymore. I'm a bit of both, and I'm having the time of my life."

EntertainmentBen and Jen

Does Ben Deserve Jen Again?
No way! Jennifer can do way better!
Maybe - but anyone deserves her!
Yes! They are made for each other!

Bye-Bye Bennifer!

Just when you thought the Ben and Jen saga would end with wedding bells, the Hollywood hotties have reportedly split up!

Last week, the two decided to postpone their big day because of excessive media attention. According to some reports, the couple called each guest individually to let them know that the wedding was off. Apparently one invitee, Britney Spears, didnt get the memo. The pop princess was spotted shopping in Santa Barbara, which is where the nuptials were supposed to take place!

Now, with reported sightings of Ben in Las Vegas and Jen in Miami over what was intended to be their wedding day weekend, rumors of their split seem unavoidably true!

Some speculate that Ben and Jen started drifting apart after their film Gigli bombed at the box office, while others believe that Ben got cold feet just days before the ceremony.

Whatever the reasons, this big-time break up will mean the loss of the medias favorite subjects.

Maybe some time spent out of the limelight will allow Ben and Jen to rekindle their old flame! For all we know, these smart stars may have taken this opportunity to skip town and elope in peace!

showbiz babies

The storks stopping at a slew of Hollywood mansions in the coming months, with a multitude of movies stars having announced that they are expecting babies!

After 1 ½ years of married life, televisions Charlie Sheen and stunning starlet Denise Richards -- who are starring together soon in Scary Movie 3 -- are making preparations for their first child, due next spring.

And sorry Rumer, Scout and Tallulahyoud better look elsewhere for a fellow funky-named playmate! Charlie and Denise plan on avoiding the Tinseltown trend of giving their newborn a fancy name, saying they will opt for a more traditional moniker.

Maybe Charlie and Denise should set a play date with Matt LeBlanc because he and his new wife, former model Melissa McKnight, are expecting a new addition as well.

This has been a very good year for Matt, who also scored megabucks to star in 2004s Friends spinoff, naturally titled Joey.

New mommies this month include The Matrix star Carrie-Anne Moss and model Rhea Durham, Mark Wahlbergs fiancée. The Italian Job hunk, whose new baby girl is named Ella Rae, will soon marry his best gal and make it official. We wish the happy family the best of luck!

Other big-screen beauties with child include Kate Hudson, Cate Blanchett and Reese Witherspoon. While this will be baby No. 2 for both Reese and Cate (Reeses daughter Ava is currently 3, while Cates son Dashiell is 2), Kates little bundle will be the first for her and rocker husband, Chris Robinson. Kates lookalike mom Goldie Hawn and stepdad Kurt Russell are said to be super-excited about having their first grandchild!

17 SEPTEMBER 2003
Another baby on the block is of Irish actor Colin Farrell and his former girlfriend, model Kim Bordenave. They have joyously welcomed a baby boy.

The 7lb 9oz infant, whose name is (I think it is James, I saw it on a cover of a mag), was born on September 12 in Los Angeles, according to Irish newspaper reports.

Though Colin's busy schedule he's currently filming Alexander The Great in Morocco meant he wasn't able to be present for the birth in the US, the Farrell family was represented. The handsome movie star's sister Catherine was on hand to welcome the little bundle of joy.

The star had revealed he and Kim would be first-time parents last March. "It's so cool," he said at the time. "I'm chuffed and over the moon."

With the baby boom sweeping through Hollywood, we wouldnt be surprised to see a caravan of strollers on the red carpet next year!

Love always and peace.
